The painting was a gift of Edward R. Lemon, proprietor of the Wayside Inn in Sudbury and an Andover native. Lemon died in 1920 and specified that the painting be given to the Town of Andover in his will. The painting was restored in 1979 by Oliver Brothers of Boston.
