Artist’s statement

My wife and I like to walk in the Moncrieff Bird Sanctuary at Phillips Academy, especially in the spring, when hundred-year-old rhododendrons are in full bloom. I started this painting on location and finished it in my studio. It is the first in a series of three paintings I did of this spectacular location, two depicting the pond and one depicting a nearby hillside that is also covered in rhododendrons.
