September Artist of the Month- David Whitney

Andover at Work by David Whitney

This volunteer project began over an year ago, inspired by the Town workers I met when I participated in the Andover Leadership academy. For this project, I gradually embedded myself into their work environments. People became accustomed to my presence and I could dissolve into the background as I worked. I go to know them over multiple visits, learning the rhythm of their jobs and the personalities of the individual workers. I have had the privilege of meeting and photographing almost every Town worker. I admire the integrity dedication and skills.

These images are part of a project to photograph Andover Town Employees as they do their jobs of public service. The project puts faces to the individuals who often work anonymously behind the scenes to keep our community functioning. The project aims to recognize these more than 350 frontline workers ad to facilitate dialog around the value of their work and how to sustain ourselves as a community.

David Whitney is an Andover artist concentrating in candid street and documentary photography. He studied at the New England School of Photography in Boston and the Fine arts Center in Provincetown.
