The people mentioned in this month’s crossword all worked in a field where knowing how to speak or read another language is very useful. If you would like to learn another language, your library card can help:
- Mango Languages is an online platform that lets you learn any of 70+ world languages through an app or web browser.
- Kids can enjoy the Little Pim and LOTE4Kids language learning platforms, available with a Boston Public Library card or eCard.
- There are hundreds of language learning CDs in the catalog you can borrow. (The Pimsleur series is especially good.) No CD player? No problem—borrow one of ours, or listen to them on your phone, tablet, or computer using Libby/OverDrive or Hoopla Digital.
- Ebooks more your thing? Libby/OverDrive and Hoopla have those, too.
- Fans of physical materials will find on Level 2 of the library:
- books, books-on-CD, music CDs, DVDs, magazines and newspapers in Chinese
- books, DVDs, magazines and newspapers in Russian
- books in Spanish
- Level 1 has hundreds of DVDs in lots of different languages as well as a revolving collection of several dozen books in a world language that gets swapped out every three months or so. (Currently, the books are in Korean. The last collection was in Spanish. Rumor has it that the next one will be in French.)
- The Ground Level has a fair number of English Language and Learning materials.
- If it’s a programming, scripting, or markup language you want to learn, O’Reilly for Public Libraries has thousands of always available online books and videos that can get you up to speed quickly.
We hope you enjoy this month’s puzzle.
