It's gardening season. How do I get my plants and supplies?

Are you feeling restless? Do you want to get gardening, begin digging, grow something, but not sure if you can?  Warm, early spring afternoons and self-quarantine can do that to you!

This year, when spring is unusually early, the request to self-quarantine poses several logistical problems to garden preparation and early planting. How can I get supplies if I shouldn’t go shopping? Are garden centers open and fully stocked with seeds, plants, fertilizers and compost? I called up several local garden centers and asked those questions.

Most garden centers are open and ready for the growing season. They are all very concerned with the health of their customers and employees. Counters are being wiped down regularly with sanitizers and in some places hand sanitizers are available for customers. Many offer a pre-order service with curbside pick-up, a couple will even deliver, and a few are willing to mail you seeds.

So, call your favorite garden center and let your inner gardener loose. Place your orders, pull on your vinyl gloves and and get going, it’s gardening season!

Here is a list of the garden centers I contacted. To protect yourself and others during this time of self-quarintine, please be sure to check their hours and instructions on how to order and pick up. Call ahead to ask questions, place orders, arrange curbside pick-up and pre-pay.

Special notes

Plant something to make you smile right now! It’s pansy season and garden centers have them. Gray days, cool nights, drizzle and quarantine need the up-lifting, happy faces of pansies to brighten the days. Put a pot where you can easily see them and smile back!

Looking for compost?  Most garden beds, borders and containers need a little refreshing with compost in the spring. Andover has two excellent sources of local compost available. Bald Hill Compost Site opens for the season April 1. The Town of Andover composts garden and lawn waste at its site on High Plain Road. The compost is available to all residents who have a permit. Black Earth Compost picks up compostable kitchen scraps from subscribing Andover households and composts them at their site in Manchester-by-the-Sea. The finished organic compost is bagged and available for purchase at many local garden centers.  --Betsy Williams
