The first of Memorial Hall Library's core values is equality. One way we practice this core value is to offer reading lists and programs that we hope will foster thought and discussion about basic human rights. In using the phrase Black Lives Matter to advertise these booklists and events, we are not making a political statement meant to endorse a particular candidate or policy, but are expressing our solidarity with that social movement's commitment to imagining and creating a world free of racism. That black lives matter is a fundamental fact, and while we also believe that all lives matter, "Black Lives Matter" is a statement that needs to be elevated during this time when black lives in particular are being devalued.
Memorial Hall Library will continue to stand with the Andover community against social injustice in all its forms and invites everyone to access our resources to build empathy, support understanding, and become informed citizens. We want MHL to be a welcoming and safe environment for all of our community members.
