New fiction by Black authors

Last week we featured some nonfiction about the African American experience and this week we've got a roundup of ten new releases by Black authors. Whether you're looking for Literary Fiction, Romance, Young Adult, or even a graphic novel adaptation there's something here for everyone. If you're looking for more fiction by Black authors, the African American Literature Book Club has many suggestions as well as lists of upcoming releases.

The sellout by Paul Beatty: A biting satire that takes on race relations in the U.S. today. When a California town seems to disappear and no one notices, Bonbon, the son of a pyschologist decides to make people remember. He acquires himself a plantation and a slave, thus forcing the Supreme Court to take on his case.
 


Octavia E. Butler's Kindred: a graphic novel adaptation by Damian Duffy and John Jennings: This classic, though often overlooked, work of science fiction gets a new graphic novel adaptation. It's the story of Dana, an African American writer who finds herself inexplicably transported back through time to slave-holding Maryland. She must try to survive and protect the young slave holder who is her great-great-grandfather.


Difficult Women by Roxane Gay (Stories): A collection of short stories from celebrated the essayist and writer who tackles the lives of many different women.


The wide circumference of love by Marita Golden (Fiction): A story of love and loss. When Diane's talented husband starts to show signs of early onset dementia, she must face a number of different decisions: how to best care for him; how to keep their family together; and how to manage when he falls in love with another resident at the nursing facility.


Allegedly by Tiffany D. Jackson (YA): Allegedly, Mary killed a baby under her mother's care when she was nine years old. Now she's out of jail and into a group home and suddenly pregnant. She knows she won't be able to keep her own baby because of her past so she decides to try and clear her name.


Breathless by Beverly Jenkins (Romance): Bestselling author Jenkins is back with another swoonworthy historical romance. Portia, a hotel manager in Arizona won't settle for just anyone, but when someone from her past comes drifting back into town, all bets are off!


I almost forgot about you by Terry McMillan (Fiction): Dr. Georgia Young supposedly has it all, so why does she feel so restless? She decides to move, quit her job, and start over but isn't prepared by the possibility of new love. 


Copycat by Kimberla Lawson Roby (Fiction): Tracy thought she was just making a new acquaintance when she befriended Simone. But what Tracy doesn't realize is that Simone will go to any length to become exactly like Tracy. 


The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas (YA): Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. He was unarmed. Facing pressure on all sides - cops, the community - Starr has to decide how to tell the truth.  


Piecing me together by Renee Watson (YA): Jade is on scholarship at a prestigious, elite, and mostly white school in Portland. The well-meaning people in her life are trying to give her "opportunities" to rise above her station, but Jade won't stand be judged by race and class alone.
